Who Needs to Apply or Exchange Their License in Italy?

You need to apply for or exchange your license in Italy if:

• You are a resident in Italy (including expats and long-term visa holders)

• You hold a non-EU driving license and plan to stay longer than 12 months

• You hold a foreign EU license and your license is about to expire or has been lost/stolen

• You are applying for your first-ever driving license in Italy

 If you’re a tourist or short-term visitor, you can use your foreign license for up to 1 year (alongside an International Driving Permit if required).

License Exchange Rules in Italy

EU & EEA Licenses

• Valid throughout Italy without exchange

• If the license is expiring or lost, you must convert it to an Italian license

• No driving test required

Non-EU Licenses

• Valid for 12 months from the date of residency registration

• After 1 year, you must exchange it (if your country has an agreement) or apply for a new license via a driving test
